YOUTH ACTIVITIES:

Make the Most of Your Winners

When your Post scholarship winners are announced take pictures and provide them to local newspapers.  Don’t mail them, take them in person!  Be sure to identify each winner and the

scholarship program by name and give the newspaper a contact name and telephone number where interested teachers/students can find out about next year’s competition. Newspapers love pictures of young people being honored and it gives your Post (and the scholarship programs) a ton of public recognition.

Target Corporation is a proud sponsor of the Voice of Democracy Program since 2005.  Again this year, Target is sponsoring the individual Department winner’s trip to Washington, D.C. If WE don’t remember, who WILL?

CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION:

Disposing of Worn U.S. Flags – Private or Public Procedure

In August, 2000, at the VFW 101st National Convention in Milwaukee, VFW delegates passed a resolution establishing a U.S. Flag disposal program for Posts to conduct, privately or publicly.

The VFW feels individuals are responsible for maintaining the U.S. Flag in their possession, however, as a public service some VFW Posts have special details assigned for gathering and disposing* of worn national emblems.  Some Posts may go further – they make gifts of new flags to groups or provide information on how to order a U.S. Flag from the VFW Emblem and Supply Department.

*SUGGESTED PROCEDURE FOR INDIVIDUALS TO USE IN PRIVATE OR PUBLIC FOR DISPOSING OF A TORN, SOILED, OR BADLY FADED U.S. FLAG.

1.        The Flag should be folded in its customary manner. (See VFW ritual.)

2.       It is important that the fire be sizeable and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the Flag.

3.       Place the Flag on the fire.

4.       The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the Flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.

5.        After the Flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.

6.        Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.

Approved for distribution by the VFW National Citizenship Education and Community Service Committee, September 18, 2000.

PROGRAMS

Community involvement always has been  a VFW priority.

The benevolence of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Auxiliaries extends beyond the realm of veterans helping veterans.

On an annual basis the VFW & Auxiliaries donate more than 13 million volunteer hours of community service. VFW members  mentor youth groups, help in food kitchens, volunteer in blood drives and visit hospitalized veterans. Others help veterans file compensation claims or are "voicing their vote" with elected officials.

VFW's Community Service programs encourage community service and increase civic pride, which enhances education, improves the environment & ensures the availability of health services for ALL veterans.

VFW's Citizenship Education program is designed to stimulate interest in America's history and traditions and to promote citizenship, civic responsibility and patriotism.

VFW's Youth Scholarship programs provide more than $3.5 million in scholarships to our nation's youth. They include Voice of Democracy, Patriot's Pen youth essay contest and Boy Scouts of America.

The VFW's partnership with the Boy Scouts of America includes the sponsoring of more than 1,200 Scouting units with 40,000 members across the nation.

VFW's Safety Program encourages VFW Posts and Auxiliaries to conduct programs in home, auto and bicycle safety, as well as programs dealing with drug awareness and substance abuse.

The VFW National Home for Children is a community development in a family like environment that is home to orphaned or single parent children of VFW or Ladies Auxiliary members. The home, which was established in 1925 on 160 acres in Eaton Rapids, Mich., emphasizes the values of education, good work habits and sound moral character.

Whether providing scholarships to the nation's youth or helping veterans receive the entitlements they have earned, the VFW is there honoring the dead by helping the living.
